What Do You Need to Give Up to Get What You Want?

You can't hold on to every comfort, every habit, and every form of safety and still become who you are capable of becoming.

At some point, most of us learn this firsthand.

Think back to a time in your life when you let go of something in order to create something better.

Did you change the way you eat to feel healthier and stronger? Curbed spending in one area so you could invest in something that mattered more? Did you choose restraint over judgment because the relationship was more important than being right?

Whatever the case, there was likely a moment of clarity. You realized that if you wanted a different result, you had to make a different choice.

That’s not a loss. That’s ownership.

What does this mean for your career?

Maybe you want more success, influence, or meaning in your work. Maybe you want more time, greater satisfaction, or more integrity in your job.

With these desires come the deeper realization: to move toward what you want, you may need to let go of what's getting in the way:

Overthinking every move. Trying to please everyone. Staying silent to avoid risk. Filling your time with distractions that don't move your life forward. Holding tightly to looking competent instead of allowing yourself to grow into something more meaningful.

This is where many people get stuck.

Not because they are incapable. But because a part of them would like progress without the discomfort. Advancement without trade-offs. A bigger life without having to loosen their grip on what feels familiar.

But growth often requires making clearer and more honest choices.

That’s good news.

Because once you stop seeing the trade-off as a loss and start seeing it as a decision in favor of what matters most, your power returns.

You focus better because you know what deserves your energy. You make decisions faster because not every option deserves equal weight. You protect your time because your work and well-being matter. You stop navigating others' approval and start leading by your own approval. You take the next step before you feel ready, knowing that with action comes clarity.

Sometimes, the biggest thing standing between you and the career you want is not a lack of talent or opportunity. It's the reluctance to let go of what no longer serves you.

So go back to that moment in your life when you chose to let go of one thing in order to gain something greater.

What pushed you over the finish line? What mattered enough to make the change worth it? Bring that same wisdom to the part of your life where you feel stuck now.

Success is less about adding and more about subtracting.

You can stop protecting habits that are costing you the future you want. You can decide that your next level of growth is worth that new behavior or habit you've been procrastinating on.

That’s how you own your future. And that's how real progress begins.

What can you let go of today?
